Polygamist Hairstyles

I've been thinking a lot of about the photographs emerging from the FLDS compound -- the photos of the women are especially interesting, maybe even more so from a style perspective.

First of all, I find it fascinating that one of the threats wielded against the girls was that if they went to the outside world, they'd be forced to wear makeup. I also can't stop thinking about the women's hair and clothes. The carefully coiffed updos are quite something -- especially considering they did not use cosmetics like hairspray. And the sleeves are actually really nice. The volume in combination with the soft pastel natural fibers.

The whole style strikes me as a little bit Frida Kahlo meets Little House on the Praire.

The Washington Post interviewed author and FLDS compound escapee Carolyn Jessop about her experience and asked about the hairstyle:

"Arlington, Va.: One of the things that has really struck me in the coverage of the young mothers is their elaborate hairstyles. Can you tell me anything about this -- are these everyday styles for women in the community? With everything else on them so plain, why the beautiful hairstyles?

Carolyn Jessop: Everything is so restricted and so controlled if you have one area where you can put a little bit of time into yourself, you do it. It's one of their few outlets. It's so controlled, the dress, no personal expression."

Strange but interesting.....I would have focused more on arching my brows personally. : - )

  1. Just a note about a misspelling your blog description: it should be "enthusiasts".

Otherwise, keep up the good work.
