Campaign For Safe Cosmetics

Morning ALL, today I will follow up on the posting from yesterday regarding lipstick. My DIVA friend Cheryl from Vegas (BTW - we use to be coworkers and HATED each other, that's one white girl with a mouth that can go toe to toe with mine! LOL) sent me an email with a link to http://safecosmetics.org/index.cfm. Here is a summary of what was learned about "red" lipstick:

We all know that we are a culture that LOVES lipstick! (hey now, us Passion For Pretty readers are not the ONLY shallow, fashionable chicks) This love starts at an early age, a 2004 Cosmetic Survey revealed that 63% of girls aged 10 and younger were lipstick users! (10 seems a bit young to me, they should be working a tinted chapstick) When we lick our lips, eat and drink while wearing lipstick, or kiss someone who is wearing lipstick, we can ingest the lipstick's ingredients. Glamour magazine (who we no longer support since the comments were made about "African-American hair" and how dreads & other natural styles were unprofessional) once quoted statistics stating that women inadvertently ingest 4 lbs of lipstick in a lifetime! Now that we know any level of lead is NOT harmless, we need to be careful.

The FDA allows 0.1 ppm limit of lead in candy and the same amount is safe for lipstick. Here is the list of red lipsticks with the highest levels of lead, over the 0.1 ppm limit:

Maybelline NY Moisture Extreme - Scarlet Shimmer
CoverGirl Incredifull Lipcolor - Maximum Red
Maybelline NY Moisture Extreme - Midnight Red
Dior Addict - Positive Red
Cover Girl Continuous Color - Cherry Brandy
L'Oreal Colour Riche - True Red
L'oreal Colour Riche - Classic Wine

Here is the list of red lipsticks that are at the 0.1 ppm limit:

MAC Matte Lipstick - Viva Glam
Revlon - Love that Red
CoverGirl Queen Collection - Ruby Remix
Clinique Long Last - Paprika
Dior Replenishing Lip Color - Red Premiere
Body Shop - Garnet
Wet N Wild - Cherry Frost
Clinique - Angel Red
Burt's Bee Lip Shimmer - Merlot

Here is the list of red lipsticks under the 0.1 ppm limit that are the safest:

Clinique Long Last Lipstick - Merlot
Estee Lauder - Maraschino
MAC Matte Lipstick - Viva Glam I
Revlon Superlustrous - Love that Red
Revlon Superlustrous - Bed of Roses
Revlon Colorstay Lipcolor - Red Velvet
Wet N Wild Mega Colors - Cherry Blossom

Remember, the lipsticks tested may or mat not be representative of the entire lipstick market for that company, the levels could vary for other shades. This list merely shows that there are high levels of lead in lipsticks of all price levels!

Until tomorrow- Smooches, Quick Claps, and MUCH Mary Kay Lipstick,
Erin

  1. Hi Erin,
Just checking out the site, to see what ways we're going to be pretty this week. I'm very pleased!!

HATE ON ME HATER!!! My Favorite song on Jill Scott's current CD!!!

I'm excited about today's topic of
Red Lipstick. I am a lover of the color Red and I have dozens of red lipsticks. Two favorites mentioned in today's post, that I wear regularly, are MAC Matte Liptstick- Viva Glam and Revlon Colorstay - Red Velvet. I'm interested in trying some of the other brands, such as Clinique- Merlot, Body Shop- Garnet and Dior- Red Premiere.
Thanks for doing the research and bringing out the awareness on the lead content. That's surely something we should all be concerned about. Usually, when picking out a lipstick, the lead content is the last thing I think about!!!!

The Jessica Simpson boots are HOT!!!!
I will visit again, but in the meantime, keep up the good work.
    Thanks
    Kassina McLain.
